The 9 Most Creative Barn Door Ideas We Saw in 2024
Jan 17th 2025
Barn doors obviously work well when used as intended, but they also work well for a variety of other functional and decorative purposes. We’re constantly amazed by the imaginative ways people use barn doors to enhance their living spaces, so we wanted to share nine of the most creative barn door ideas we saw in 2024.
Check these out and see if they get your creative juices flowing!
1. Window Shutters
Barn door window shutters are one of the coolest trends we noticed this year, as they not only look great but also provide a lot of functional appeal. They’ll let you ditch the traditional window treatments (which always seem to break anyway), and they can provide extra insulation value, which can help lower your monthly utility bills.
2. Decorative Headboards
An interesting headboard can instantly transform a bed, converting even the most nondescript model into the visual centerpiece of a room. Classic barn doors are typically the most popular style used for this approach, as they’re easy to paint or stain to match the rest of your bedroom. We’ve even seen some people attach reading lamps to their barn door headboards for additional wow-factor value.
3. Hidden Workstations
Have a tiny home office tucked into a closet or nook? You need a door you can close during important meetings and those times when you just need to focus. Barn doors work perfectly in this manner, and we saw scads of homeowners use them to create functional (not to mention great-looking) doors for their home offices this year.
4. Art Pieces
We were astounded at all of the creative barn door ideas we saw this year, but it was the art projects that took the prize. And that makes sense — in many ways, barn doors are natural media for art projects. They come in an array of materials, styles, and finishes, and they’re easy to alter in several different ways. We saw artists attach three-dimensional items to them for a mixed-media approach, and we saw stains applied strategically to create geometric patterns. We even saw full-blown murals painted on a few.
5. Transitional Barriers Between Indoor and Outdoor
Spaces
As people begin embracing outdoor living spaces more and more, many homeowners have started looking for ways to create interesting boundaries between these interior and exterior spaces. We saw several examples of people using barn doors in these applications in 2024. Sometimes, the barn doors would be used to replace the existing doors (especially among those living in warm climates), but others used them as a way to dress up existing doors that they’d leave in place. Live edge wood slabs work really well in this context, as the natural wood material looks great when placed near these kinds of indoor-outdoor interfaces.
6. Entertainment Center Covers
Adding doors to your entertainment center can help make your entire living room look tidier and provide a more refined aesthetic. We saw a lot of people installing their own DIY entertainment center doors this year, and our favorites were always the ones that relied on barn doors – especially the ones made from glass.
7. Interactive Art Surfaces for Children
Kiddo-oriented DIY projects were also in vogue this year, and our favorite projects gave youngsters a chance to learn, play, and exercise their artistic instincts. This is super easy to do with a barn door, as many parents demonstrated. Simply attach some magnetic surfaces, chalk boards, or white boards to the face of the door, make some type of base that’ll keep the door standing up safely, hand your little one the appropriate art supplies, and watch what they create!
8. Garden Doors
Creative folks with green thumbs constructed a number of cool DIY projects this year, and we saw many attaching planters full of lush shrubs, vines, and ferns to barn doors. Some used indoor plants and situated their “garden doors” in kitchens, bathrooms, or living rooms, while others stuck with outdoor plants (or even flowers), and used the garden doors as focal points on decks, patios, and porches.
9. Hidden Library
One of the most creative ideas we saw this year was the emergence of tiny libraries. This trend saw people turning small to medium sized shelving units into concealable libraries. Our favorite ones used a barn door as the frame, simply adding single or double doors (depending on the size) to the unit for concealment and revealment.
