Picking Your Barn Door Design Style

Picking Your Barn Door Design Style

Oct 18th 2024

Barn doors have been a leading interior design and home remodeling trend for the past several years. One of the main reasons for this is their versatility - both in design and use. At BarnDoorz, no two of our doors are the exact same. From your door’s size, to its design, finish and more, every single one of our barn doors are custom made to order. Endless design combinations demand the question - where do you start?

This article will break down the different barn door styles and help you pick your own.

Glass

Glass barn doors offer an ‘airy’ touch to a home’s interior. Unlike most barn door design types, glass barn doors will allow light to pass through. Many homeowners like to take advantage of this feature with smaller rooms because it helps a room open up and feel more spacious. While options vary by company, BarnDoorz offers three different glass options:

  • Clear: Like its name suggests, clear is completely transparent and does not obstruct your view between rooms.
  • Flemish: Flemishglass obstructs the view but still allows light to pass; it has a look that resembles antique, hand-blown glass,.
  • Rain: Rain glass also obstructs view and allows light to pass, but gives the appearance of raindrops streaming down a window.

Clear glass will be a great option for any room where privacy is not an issue. Obstructed glass options (rain & flemish) will be better options for rooms that demand more privacy, like the entrance to a master bathroom. If you’re looking to separate rooms but still keep a sense of openness in your home, glass barn doors are a great option.

Rustic Farmhouse

It’s ironic that rustic farmhouse barn doors are the trendiest in interior design right now, as their designs are rooted in antique, countryside nostalgia. Just goes to show the circularity of design trends.

Rustic Farmhouse Barn Door Style

Rustic barn doors offer a warm, welcoming charm to any home. Again, designs differ depending on where you look, but they typically feature natural wood finishes and clean, sharp lines. Cross and Z-bracing is a very popular theme with this design style. All of BarnDoorz’ BarnCraft rustic doors use real wood planks made from canadian pine, a sturdy wood that further instills the rugged feel of a farmhouse.

Many homeowners are surprised to see how versatile rustic barn doors are; they blend beautifully with both traditional and modern home designs.

Classic

The ‘classic’ barn door collection at BarnDoorz is crafted from 100% knotty alder wood. Classic barn doors tend to evoke similar emotion to the rustic farmhouse style, but classic offers a more natural, organic look & feel. With their distinct knots and wood grain, every single classic barn door is truly unique. Design is minimalistic, with options like double Z, double X, and single or double panels. The classic line comes in solid colors only.

The classic line is available in a range of organic shades.

MDF

The MDF (Medium Density Fiber) was designed for the true DIY-er. Medium Density Fiber is a smooth, uniform material that can be easily finished or painted. MDF is crafted from recycled wood fibers, making it environmentally friendly and budget friendly.

Each of our MDF doors are available with a white finish, inviting you to paint them any color you wish. There are 19 different design options, ranging from single X to triple x to panels, chevrons, etc. The list goes on. There is even a chalkboard option, for the most (or least) organized among us!

MDF is also our most weather-resistant material, making it the ideal choice for outdoor uses.

Iron Plank

Similar to the classic line, iron plank barn doors feature knotty alder wood. The key difference is that our iron plank line comes in vertical wood planks and is surrounded by a black steel border.Iron Plank Barn Door Style

The black steel border is subtle but makes a bold, distinct statement. It has an inherently modern feel but works well in spaces that mix rustic and industrial styles. It can be paired especially well with concrete walls, exposed brick, and even reclaimed wood to create a loft-style aesthetic that feels urban and sophisticated.

The iron plank line is ideal for those going for a minimalist look with a raw edge to it.

Live Edge Wood Slabs

Our most unique design available may be our live edge wood slabs. They are the only pieces at BarnDoorz that are made from a single slab of wood. Our wood slab doors showcase the raw, natural beauty of wood in its most authentic form. They retain the tree’s natural edge with curves, knots and grains unique to every individual piece.

This design option highlights the natural imperfections inherent to wood and creates a sense of connection with the beautiful outdoors. It is perfect for those who value minimalist craftsmanship and would like to bring a bit of nature into the home. Serving both as a functional piece and a work of art, live edge wood slab barn doors make a great fit in any home design & style.
