How to Make Your Master Bedroom a Retreat
Aug 29th 2019
If your master bedroom is just a place to sleep and get ready for work in the morning, it may be time for a makeover. You deserve a room that looks great, where you can get a good night’s sleep, and where you can feel pampered and relaxed. Here are a few simple ways to turn your master bedroom into a luxurious owner’s retreat.
Invest in Your Mattress
Sleep is important for both your mental and physical health, so it makes sense to invest in a good mattress with proper support. Select the highest quality mattress you can afford and enjoy the comfort and luxury of a good night’s sleep. If your budget won’t accommodate a new mattress, you can breathe new life into your current mattress with a quality mattress topper. Whatever you do, remember that you spend a significant amount of time in bed. Make it rejuvenating, relaxing, and lush.
Create Luxury with Linens
When it comes to bed linens, thread count does matter, and you don’t have to go overboard. Look for sheets with a thread count of at least 400 but don’t feel like you need to go higher than 800. You don’t get much more at 800 and you’ll lose durability. If you like crisp, cool sheets choose a percale weave. If you prefer silky soft sheets, select sateen. Whichever you choose, it’s worth the investment to go with Egyptian or Pima cotton for true luxury.
Have a Seat
Wouldn’t it be nice to sit down to tie your shoes rather than to perch precariously on your bed? What about lounging in an armchair reading a book? Depending on the size of your bedroom, you can add seating and really add to the relaxing atmosphere. If you have a medium to smaller sized master, try adding an upholstered bench at the end of the bed. Many benches come with storage as an added bonus. A bench can add style, color, and functionality.
If you are lucky enough to have a larger master, you may have room for a cozy side or armchair. You’ll feel pampered and enjoy the peaceful space to read, relax, and enjoy your new retreat. You may even have room for two chairs and a small table. You and your partner can create a special morning coffee nook or evening wind-down space to share a glass of wine. Remember, this is your retreat. Create a space for you and your partner to sit back and unwind.
Light it Up
Are you lighting your master bedroom with functional but boring lighting? Create a more sumptuous environment with special lighting. Choose soft lighting suitable for reading in bed and other nighttime routines. For overhead lighting, consider replacing ceiling fixtures with creative choices like a mounted drum fixture, a small chandelier, or a hanging lamp.
Add a Barn Door
Barn doors make wonderful additions to home interiors for their functionality, style, and aesthetic. One way to use a sliding barn door is in your master bedroom. Why not swap out the ensuite door with a sliding barn door? Not only will you save space, but you will also add character to your decor. You can choose from a variety of styles and finishes including rustic, modern, traditional, and antique. You may even choose to DIY your barn door facade with elegant paint to match the sumptuous decor of your retreat.
Barn doors can also be used as master bedroom entry doors, closet doors, and to create nooks. In many newer construction homes, master bedrooms have extra spaces that lend themselves to creating small office spaces or other private areas.
