How to Make Spring Cleaning Fun for Kids

Apr 23rd 2019

Spring cleaning is in the air. If you’re someone who typically handles this annual task alone, why not take a different approach this year? Get the kids involved. This will not only help you, but it will also teach your children accountability and the value of a clean home. Here are some ways to make spring cleaning fun for kids.

Work as a Team

No one wants to clean the bathroom, especially on their own. But, even a 6-year-old will scrub the sink alongside Dad cleaning the toilet bowl. Teamwork gets kids involved in the process, teaches them cleaning skills, and allows you to model the standards and approach you desire. Working as a team involves kids in the process and most important, models both the attitude and the job standards you are trying to teach.

Chart Your Chores

Sometimes, kids are more eager to do things when parents aren’t giving the directive. Even the kindest, gentlest reminder, especially to a teen, can mean a disconnect. And what parent wants to spend their Saturday nagging? Instead, create an easy-to-read chore chart or write the tasks on index cards and divvy them up among teams. Make cleaning something you invest in together rather than something you demand of kids.

Play Music

Music is a great motivator for kids and adults alike. Upbeat music helps get your blood pumping, can make you feel better and gives you a perfect opportunity to sing out loud. Play age-appropriate tunes throughout the house or allow everyone to enjoy headset privileges.

Give Teens “Big Jobs”

While your young child might be excited to help you clean the bathroom, chances are your teen will want to work alone. Give your teen a larger job of their own. Whether they clean the garage, reorder a cluttered coat closet or shampoo a hall carpet, allow them to take pride in their work. Step back and give them leeway to do the job their way. And praise them. They may complain at first, but they won’t let you down and think of the confidence they’ll build.

Do Good

You can’t beat spring cleaning for the fresh start it gives your home. However, nothing compares to how good it feels to give back during this time. Show your children the big picture by including them in cleaning out their clothes and toy closets for donation. Once done, involve them in the donation process. Have them accompany you to the drop off site, or for older children, have them research and choose an appropriate charity.

Reward Them

While spring cleaning is a day well spent, it’s probably not anyone’s first choice activity. Chances are your kids (and you) would rather be doing something else with your free time. Reward them and yourself with a treat when you’re finished. Take the family out for pizza, go for ice cream or watch a movie together. For teens maybe add on screen time or allow for some other extra privilege. You’ll all feel better when you’ve had your reward and you will garner goodwill for next year.
