How to Decorate with Color in Your Home
Sep 25th 2019
Color evokes emotion and mood -- it is also a compelling design tool. Every color has a personality. Yellow makes us think of sunshine and brightness. Blue is known to be a calming color, while green promotes relaxation. A fiery hue like red is passionate. When decorating a home, it is about finding the colors that suit your personality and lifestyle. Even if feel stuck in neutrals, you too can let color into your home.
You Can’t Go Wrong With Blue & White
This color combination is always a winner. Think of blue jeans with a white t-shirt. Or a navy blazer with a crisp white button-down. These never go out of style. Like black and white but less stark, blue and white are classic, welcoming, and can be casual or dressed up. Imagine a living room with blue denim-like wallpaper, white accessories, and blue-and-white wingback chairs. Or, accent your bright white kitchen walls and countertop with vibrant navy cabinets.
Color Unity
Create an integrated look and ease the transitions between rooms by decorating within the same color palette throughout your home. While the entryway may be wallpapered in striking green and white pattern, for example, the living room (within view) may have forest green walls, white trim, and a beautiful natural leather sofa for contrast. Repeating a unified palette, with creative variations in hue and execution, will result in a brilliant, daring use of color.
White is a Color
White brightens up any room and creates the illusion of space. But not all whites are created equal. Choose crisp white hues with gray or blue undertones and avoid yellow whites as those will warm areas and close them in. When looking for white to open and enlarge your space think walls, ceilings, and drapes -- anything that elongates or spans the length of the room.
Another great use for white is to refresh and modernize. Do you have old furniture that needs a boost? Is grandma’s dining set a little dark for your contemporary taste? A fresh coat of white paint may be just what your used pieces need. Or, try bleaching the wood to create a beautiful, rustic look. It’s an easy DIY project that will transform your furniture from old and tired to fresh and stylish.
Go Bold in the Bathroom
Do you want to push the envelope? You can use color in so many ways when decorating a bathroom, especially with wallpaper and patterns. Keep in mind, wallpaper in the bathroom has limitations. It works best when used away from humid areas, so avoid walls near the shower, for example. If wallpaper doesn’t appeal to you, go with paint and tiles and have fun with color. Go bold.
