How to Decorate a Patio
Mar 29th 2018
Spring has finally arrived! As the weather warms up and the days get longer, it’s tempting to spend every free minute outside. When you take the time to decorate your patio, you make the space outside of your home welcoming and cozy for you, your family, friends, and any visiting guests. Consider dedicating a weekend in the near future to decorate your patio for the season ahead.
Define the Space
You want your patio to stand out from the rest of your yard and outdoor areas. By defining the space, you can develop a design scheme for your patio that perfectly accompanies the interior decor of your home. With a painted rug and privacy screens, you can turn an open outdoor space into an intimate patio. You can also plant evergreen trees or tree-form versions of shrubs such as lantana or hibiscus to define the space and add some additional privacy.
Pick Your Colors
One of the most important parts of designing any space, indoors or out, is picking your color palette. When choosing one for your patio, consider the foliage you can incorporate into the design that grows in the colors you are using for your palette. Choose outdoor furniture and decor pieces in complementary hues.
Paint Brick
Now that you’ve selected your patio color palette update a boring brick facade with a can of paint. The stone texture combined with a beautiful, high-quality paint color refreshes and customizes any outdoor space.
Provide Ample Seating
Make your patio a cozy and relaxing place for anyone with plenty of seating options. Chairs, chaise lounges, couches, and benches are all outstanding options for a patio. Remember to choose pieces with weather-resistant materials, so the rain and wind don’t destroy them before the year is over.
Add Lighting
The patio party doesn’t always end just because the sun goes down. That means you have to provide outdoor lighting for your patio. Candles and string lights add the light you need while adding a bit of ambiance to the space. A motion-detector light also makes it easy to keep the party going with ease. Building a firepit is another way to create much-needed light while also making your patio winter-friendly.
Make It Easy to Entertain
The best part of having a beautiful patio is enjoying the gorgeous weather during the spring and summer. Sometimes outdoor entertaining can be more hassle than it's worth though. By building an outdoor kitchen or adding a beverage table to your patio, you lighten the load when it comes time to entertain friends and family outside.
Don’t forget that when you entertain outdoors, guests are likely to visit the interior of your home to, at least, use the bathroom. To communicate what parts of the home are on and off limits to visitors, close and lock all sliding modern doors (currently on sale for 30 percent off with promo code SAVE30).
Create Storage Space
Sometimes the weather turns on us, and even though outdoor furniture and decor can withstand a little rain, a deck box makes it easy to store cushions, grilling supplies, and other outdoor items. Learn how to build your own deck box here or invest in pre-built pieces.
Get Crafty
The warmer weather makes it funny to step outside and get messy with craft supplies. With a few simple DIY projects, you can turn a drab outdoor area into a fabulous patio, perfect for entertaining. Nothing makes a patio your own by incorporating your own handmade decor accessories and furniture.
