An Overview on How To Install Barn Doors
Dec 12th 2024
Of all the potential interior remodel changes you could make, ones that involve mounting are usually the most daunting. Mounting doors - even more so. It really shouldn’t feel this way, though. Mounting a barn door is far simpler than most people may think. It can be done by one person (though we recommend two for hanging it up), and can be done in under an hour.
It’s much easier (and safer) to finish a sandwich with multiple bites than swallowing it whole, which is why we wrote this piece. The purpose of this basic guide on barn door installation is not to replace the instructions we provide , but to break down the process into its main steps and components. It will give you an idea of how simple it really is to install your barn door. So, let’s jump in.
Step 1: Materials,Tools and Measurement:
The best way to start any project is to ensure you have all of your required materials and tools in front of you. You don’t want to be chasing down any equipment mid-step.
The materials you will need that come directly from BarnDoorz include your door, its sliding track, the handle and any other barn door accessories that may have come with your order. Additionally, your door and sliding kit will come with all of the screws, bolts, washers, etc. necessary for installation.
Outside of the materials we provide customers, there are some required tools for your installation as well. We highly recommend you use the below:
-
Stud finder
-
Drill
-
Pencil or pen
-
Leveler
-
Clamps and speed square (helpful but not required)
Once you’ve laid out all of the moving pieces, you’re ready to begin measuring.
Step 2: Measurement
Now, before breaking ground there are a few essential measurements that need to be taken to ensure safety and satisfaction post-install.
First is measuring your door opening. This should have been done pre-order, but do it once more to ensure you received the correct piece and that your previous measurements were accurate. In addition to measuring the opening, you'll also need to measure either the right or left side of the opening (whichever direction you plan on letting the door slide). When the door is in the open position, it will be taking up space on the wall next to the opening. Also make sure that on this portion of the wall, there are no obstructions that will prevent you from sliding past.
The next ’measurement’ you will need to make is with a stud finder, finding the studs that you will use to hang your rack on. Now, if the studs do not line up to cross over your door’s opening (they typically do), you will need to drill a support beam centered over your doorway into your studs, then drill the rack into your support beam. For the sake of this example, we will assume your studs are positioned with your doorway.
Take your sliding track, and align the holes above your doorway at the desired height, aligning the holes with studs. Use your level to ensure it’s straight, and make your marks. Using the instruction manual and styrofoam inserts, install the wheel connector piece to the door.
Using a drill bit, drill the holes you marked over your studs. Once the holes are made, take the provided wood screws and secure the rack to your wall.
Step 3: Hang & Test
Once your wheels are connected to the door and rack is mounted, you can slide your door onto its track. We recommend help for this step because of our doors’ weight. Lift your door and fit the wheels onto the sliding rack. Glide the door back and forth along the track to ensure it is connected properly.
Step 4: Enjoy!
If you’ve made it this far, congratulations - You’ve officially installed your barn door! Congratulations! You’ve successfully installed your barn door. Now, take a step back and admire your work.
