A Look at Barn Door Hardware: Gila Barn Door Pull Handle
Jul 28th 2020
No barn door is complete without an attractive door handle. The Gila Barn Door Pull Handle, one of eight high-quality design styles we offer at Barndoorz, is a robust yet elegant handle designed to fit all BarnCraft sliding doors. Once installed, it acts as an easy-open tool for moving the door along the rolling track.
The Gila Style
This rugged handle brings to mind Wild West adventures and stark Southwest landscapes, where desert plants rise up from the sand and lizards curl themselves around rocky outcroppings.
The Gila pull handle makes its mark with two circular backplates, a sturdy central post, and gently wrapped iron detailing reminiscent of a lizard's tail. Both distinctive and hard-wearing, the Gila is an eye-catching piece of hardware with classic good looks.
Imagine seeing the Gila handle on the Caprock Barn Door, Lynnwood Barn Door, or Double Z BarnWood Knotty Alder Two Piece Barn Door. These doors, which bring classic beauty to everything from Southwest to Mediterranean design styles, are just a few of the sliding barn door designs perfect for the Gila.
Measurements and Sizing
We offer the Gila pull handle in two sizes: 12 inch and 24 inch. Each pull handles includes two backplates that measure 2 1/2 inches in diameter, with two screw holes per backplate. Seen from the side, the handle extends 2 1/2 inches out from the door. Each handle ships separately, even if you have purchased a new barn door.
Please know that you can't install the Gila handle on the back side of the door. While it installs on the front only, the handle works beautifully on either the left or right side of the barn door.
Our Gila pull handle is made from wrought iron and weighs in at 2.6 pounds for the 12-inch model. Each piece is handmade as well, which means you can expect to see minor variations in appearance and finish. When you install the Gila handle, you'll love the way it enhances your modern barn door.
Prepping for Installation
The Gila pull handle requires just a few tools for installation.
Tools and Equipment Needed:
- Screwdriver
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Handle (includes four screws)
- Bubble level
How to Install the Gila Pull Handle
Step 1
First, determine where the handle will sit on the door. You want to identify the most comfortable position, typically at wrist height with a bent arm. Look at another door for inspiration if necessary. Measure and then use a pencil to make an initial mark on the front side. The mark should correspond with where the handle's base would go.
Step 2
Grab the Gila pull handle and position it above the initial mark. If it rests too low, raise the handle and make a new mark. Make minor adjustments to move the handle closer to the edge of the door or further away from it, as comfort allows. Mark each screw hole. Most handles tend to sit three to four inches from the edge.
Step 3
Hold the Gila handle in place and use another hand (or ask someone to assist) to hold the bubble level on top of the handle post. Check that the bubble appears in the center of the level. Adjust if not.
Step 4
Now it's time to install the door handle. Use the screwdriver to screw in each screw, tightening to a snug fit without stripping the screw head. You may need to make an initial impression for each screw position to help the screw attach to the door.
Step 5
Step back and inspect your handiwork. Congratulations! Your sliding barn door and handle is ready to use.
