4 Interior Design Resolutions For The New Year
Jan 16th 2020
Every January we vow to reinvent ourselves, or at the very least, pick up some good habits. Our resolutions are usually centered around ourselves, our careers, and loved ones. But what about your living space? Your home is your sanctuary, and if you’ve been overlooking it, now is a great time to start implementing some interior design resolutions. Here are four to help you get started.
1. Take More Risks
Just like we fall into an eating or exercise routine, we often do the same with our decor. We choose colors and patterns we’re familiar with and furniture styles that complement everything else in our homes. For the new year, try thinking outside the box with your design choices. Introducing a bright color to a room of neutrals, adding a funky plant to the hallway, or pulling inspiration from a completely different aesthetic are all great ways to freshen up a space.
If you’d rather do something more drastic, there’s no shame in entirely revamping a room. This can include a complete furniture overhaul, fresh paint on the walls, or even renovations, like adding pocket or barn doors. A strategically-placed door can help transform a space.
2. Focus On Self Care
Creating a sanctuary where you can relax and quiet your mind is vital for mental and physical well-being. Try making it a priority in 2020 by dedicating a calm space to rest and rejuvenation.
Something as simple as adding an extra throw blanket and pillow to a couch can help cozy things up. You can never go wrong with an essential oil burner, small potted plant, or lightly scented candle, either.
When selecting new paint, furniture, or accents, lean toward calming hues, like light blue, soft lilac, or warm tan. If you can, select an area that has plenty of natural light.
3. Find New Life For Old Furniture
Sometimes the most rewarding changes can be the simplest. Reorganizing your furniture or repurposing old, stored pieces is an excellent way to get your creative juices flowing. When you see a room oriented in a new way, you'll start to get bigger ideas, like adding a reading nook or window treatment.
It also can’t hurt to take things a bit further by getting your hands dirty. Consider painting or staining an old coffee table, bookcase, or patio chairs.
4. Get Organized
One of the least expensive ways to de-stress and feel good about your home is to clear out excess clutter. For some of us, this can be a herculean task, so start small. Choose a room and then hone in on a problem drawer or cabinet. Purge it of things that are broken and donate items you know you’ll never use. Add shelves to house various knickknacks like keys, magazines, and DVDs, or use a wicker basket to keep shoes tidy near the front door.
Not only will this make your home look cleaner and younger, but it will make it easier to find the items you need and enjoy the most. You can stay clutter-free by periodically reassessing what you do have and thinking twice about what you bring home.
New Year, New Space
Ready to take on the decade with something more dramatic? Consider adding a barn door. Sliding barn doors offer a simple, elegant way to completely reinvent an area. And since they slide against a wall instead of opening outward, they add a streamlined touch without getting in the way. Whatever your design concept, Barndoorz can help. Let us transform your home and give you a functional room accent you’ll enjoy not only for the new year but for years to come.
